Burkey a 17-year-old white servant boy was employed by Thomas McAuli-
ffe, a Philadelphia, Pae, merchant. One night as McAuliffe lay
sleeping, Burke bludgeoned him to death with a claw hammer. He then
attempted to flee the country to Ireland on a boat under an assumed
namee Officials followed him by small craft down the river to Dela-
ware Bay where the ship was ordered to halt and Burke was removed
and returned to Philadelphia where he was tried, convicted and sen-
tenced to death. He was hanged on Oct. 16, 178h.
