FIELDS, Asbury

Fields, a white Bradley Co., Tenn., moonshiner, went to rural Birch-
wood on Auge 5; 1921, and offered to sell a bootlegger, J, R. Pierce,
205 gallons of moonshine whiskey for $2.50 per gallon. Pierce
agreed to purchase the whiskey though he had not sean it and arrange-
ments were made for them to meet on a deserted road for the :transfer,
Pierce obtained the money in the presence of his nephew and some
friends and departed for the rendezvous. When Pierce did not re-
turn, some friends went to search for him and found his body near
Mt. Zion Church, He had been bludgeoned to death and the weapon,
a shop hammer subesqquently identified as having belonged to Fields

Columbus , Gae, where he had rented an apartment, paying a month's
rent in advance, and obtained employment in a mill, Returned to
