Allen, alias Robert Allen, was a 36-year-old black Unemployed interior
decorator living in Nashville, Tem. He had previously served a term
in the Tennessee Ytate Prison for assault with intent to commit murder
and a nine-month term in the Rutherford So., Tenn., jail for theft,
In 1952, he was suspected of having poisoned his first wife and his
9Q-year-old son, Jimmy, for insurance money, but when he passed a 1se
detector test which ihdicated that he had no guilty knowledge of their
fleaths, he was freed. He married again and moved to Miami, "la.,
where a stepson, Reginald Allen, 3-years-old, died of strangulation
after swallowing some metal ball-bearings. Once again, Allen collect-
ed a sizeable insurance claim and returned with his wife and returned
to Nashville. On dune 26, 1955, two months after Repinald's death,
his 19=month~old stepdaughter, Janet, was taken i11 and Allen took
her out, supposedly to the Doctor. When he returned home, he told his
wife that she was asleep in the backseat of the car and that she had
