Lake, a 32-year-old Louisville, Ky., white man and his wife, Mabel,
had domestic troubles which culminated on July 20; 192), when she
took their children and left him. ‘She went to the restaurant owned
by a friend, Mrs. Mary Murphy Smith with whom she plamed $0 stay un-
til she would make other arrangements. That afternoon, Lake drove to
the restaurant and asked his wife to return wkkk home with him. When
she refused, he drew a pistol and shot Mrs. Smith fourtimes as she
cowered in a corner. Mrs Lake ran screaming from the restaurant and
into a grocery store next door begging the owner to hide her, As
Lake enbered,s she crouched behind a counter, but he saw her and shot
her five times. In the meantime, the grocer, his wife and some cus-~
tomers had fled the s tore. lake then turned his pistol on himself
and shot himself four times in an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Tried
first for the murder of his wife, he received a life sentence. When
convicted of the death of Mrs. Smith, he was sentenced to die and he
was electrocuted xhm at the Kentucky State Prison on May 28, 1926.
