Ryan, They were traced to their hideout by a. slip of paper found in
Hart's pocket and Jacques was captured hiding in a closet. Ryan
managed to hide underneath a bench in a courtyard and was taken into
custody when he was betrayed by his protruding feet. O'Day engaged
in an hour-long gun battle with police from the roof before he surr-
endered when he ran out of ammuntion. While awaiting trial, Hart and
Ryan managed to escape from jail but were recaptured two weeks later.
All four were convicted and. sentenced to death and on. June 1, 1932,
they were hanged in. the New Orleans Parish Prison yard, Jacques and
Ryan's necks were broken by the drop and they died instantly, but
the ropes slipped on both Hart and O'Day and they slowly strangled
to death with it taking 0 mimates for the young O'Day to die.
