"Knoxville, TN, 9-27-1900 - A special to THE SENTINEL
from Rogersville says James Burchfield, white, was this
morning sentenced to hang November 9 for the murder of
his wife on August 28. Burchfield had just come home
from a year8s term in the state penitentiary when
he committed thecrime. During the trial, J. Me Phipps,
a reputable citizen, stated that on her death bed Mrs.
Burchfi#ld said a few years ago her husband set fire to
a cabin near Rogersville and burned alive Mandy Akers and
