MARTHERS, Freeman
Marthers, a white peddlar of cheap jewelry who also conducted petty
gambling and "shell games" on his travels had been raised by parents
who encouraged him to be dishonest. In 1828, he happened to be in
a tavern where Colonel Jonathan Brooks, a 57-year-old veteran of
the War of 1812 who was on, furlough because of i11 heaAth, stopped
and he overhead Brooks tell the proprietor that he planned to pass
through Wayne County,Fennsylvania, on his way to his New York home
and would, perhaps, purchase some cakble to drive to New York,
Marthers proceeded the Colonel and waited for him at a tavern where
bhe believed that he would stop. While waiting, he sold virtually
all of his jewelry and established a character as one who could not
be trusted. When Brooks finally arrived, he agreed to let Marthers
ride along with him and they were seen together at several Stops»
