White, a Mineral Wells, Tex., white man, was known as a common theif
and it was believed that he was guilty of countless BOMs8HEXTK
robberies and burglaries, An 18-year-old nephew, Robert Bagwill,
lived with him and his common-law wife and was his apprentice in
crime. The night of Jan. 28, 1949, was cold and rainy and they de-
cided to drive to Stephenville, Tex., and rob the service station
owned and operated by Crockett Ross who was reputed to carry a large
sum of money. White, who was driving, parked 200 yards from the
station and remained in the car, Bagwill walked back and entered,
warming himself by the heater while R@ss serviced an automobile con-
taining a boy and a girl. The girl, who entered the station, got a
good look at Bagwill, After the couple drove off, Ross stepped in
to the heater and Bagwill shot him six times, stole his wallett and
the money from the cash drawer totalljmg $300 and returned to the
car. Ross’ body was found shortly afterwards and the girl gave a
good description of Ross which was relayed to police officials in
