Williams, a 38-year-old,Port Arthur, Tex., black man, was indicted
on seven different eounts of rape and assault to kill. He would
prowl Port Arthur "Lover's lanes" wntil he found a parked car con-

to have relations with him, His victims were both white and black
but the assault for which he was tried and convicted was that of a

stretcher from the hospital to identify him and relate details of
the attack and he was also identified in court by two white girls
who gave accounts of his attacks on them. Public indigaation was
