Negro, was hanged in the yard of the county farm here today
for the murder of Frank Smith, Deputy Sheriff, Mackey mou-
nted the scaffold at 5:30 this morning, He was pronounced
dead 12 minutes after the trap was sprung,"

“July. 10, 1926<In an effort to thwart the threat of mob
violence, troops surrounded the county jail at Clarksdale
Friday night and will remain on duty until the feeling
against Sylvester,Mackey, negro, has subsided. Mackey is
charged with killing Deputy Sheriff Frank Smith near Green-
wood. He was moved to the jail at Clarksdale for safekeep-
ing following a demonstration at Greenwood Wednesday night,
Twenty men of Company F, 155 Infantry, were placed on guard
by orders of Adj, Gen, Curtis T. Green, following a request
to Gov, Whitfield through Sheriff Glass of Coahoma County,
Feeling against the negro has mounted to feaver heat all

had been transferred to Clarksdale men began pouing into
the city from Greenwood. The arrival of the troops Friday
night probably was all that saved the negro at that time,
