JIM (Slave) 5-31-1823.

Jim, slave of John Ragsdale, hanged at Franklin, William-
gon County, Tenn., on May 31, 1823, for burglary of

home of Robert Beard in which Mr, Beard and his wife
were boths truck by an axes Beard's slave, Harry, was
also convicted and sentenced to die, but granted a re-
prieve and Jim's gallows confession ended up saving him,
