HARRIS, Cicero

Harris, a black resident of Bristol, Va., had been going with the
wife of another black man named Samuel Ware, Ware secured a warrant
for Harris’ arrest, but before it couli be served, the two men met
in the black district of Bristol and Harris accused Ware of having
made threats against him. Ware turned to walk away and Harris

drew a revolver, shooting him three times and killing him. Tried,
convicted and sentenced to die, Harris was hanged at the Court
House in Bristol on Dec. 20, 1901. His last words, spoken from the

gallows, were: "The Lord has blessed me and I am ready to meet my
God." ,
