HEBERLING, Edward

Heberling, a 32-year-old shipyard workery in Seattle, Wash., had
served time in the Michigan “tate Prison. On a morning when he had
overslept, he went to the home of a neighbor when he knew that the
19-year-old daughter, Harriet “indstrom, was alone and got into the
house on the pretext that he had promised her mother to make some
repairs. When the girl resisted his advances, he bludgeoned her
unconscious with a poker that he had AKGHXEESIXKTEXENAEEMSRED
brought from his own apartment, raped and stabbed and strangle her
to death. When officers went to question him, he locked himself in
the bathroom BEXKIE and slashed both of his wrists. After receiving
emergency treatment that saved his life, Heberling confessed that he
had killed the girl, Police officers believed that he was the rapist-
murderer who had also killedHazel Shaw, a secretary, and Mrs. lvelyn
Pritchnow in the Southbide sectionof Seattle. Though Heberling
steadfastly denied that he was guilty of these two slayings, they had
beach been bludgeoned with a poker and stranged after having been

raped and there were no more killings following Heterling's arrest.
Convicted, he was hanged at Washington State Prison on Dec. 8, 19lie
