"Madison, Fla., Nov. 8, 1901-"i11 Jones, a negro, desperado.
who recently killed 3 men in 1 day, two blacks and one
white, and shot several other members of thesheriff's
posse, was publicly hanged here shortly before noon, Se-
veral hundred people witnessed the execution, among whom
were a number of negroes, There was no excitement though
extra guards had been provided, The desperado showed no
weakening of nerve and made no confession or speech of re-
pentance, The executionwas successful to a marked de-
gree, Theneck wasbroken by the drop and the murderer was
dead in 1 minutes from the time the trap was sprung."
