Hanged Jackson, Tenn., June 9, 1839.

Madison County, Tenn.) was that of Reilly about 1838,
The criminal had been convicted of murder after con-
fessing to the crime while intoxicated and denying it when
he became sober, The cppwd gathered on the, outskirts of
the town, just west of the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad
station on Highway 70. Although the victim had been
convicted of the crime, he stall maintained that he was
innocent and prayed that the Lord save him by some sign
from Heaven, The gallows was prepared and the rope was
about to be placed about his neck when a horrible storm
arose, such a badgone that the crowd dispersed, but the
victim remained on the spot until the storm abated when th
officers and crowd returned and proceeded with the cere-
