"A writ was issued for Sheppard Busby the the U. Se
Commissioner at Fort Smith, charging him with living in
adultery with two young Indian women in the Cherokee
Nation, and placed in the hands of Deputy Marshal Barney
Connelly, who resided in that district at Vinita, Conn-
elley was a highly respected citizen and a good officer.
He had arrested scores of violators and was a man of ex-
treme caution, ut as he approached Busby's home the
morning of August 19, 1891, to serve the warrant, the
latter opened fire on him, killing him instantly. Busby
was hanged for his crime, April 27, 1892.
