Williams, a 23-year-old black man, was a Lexington, Ky., laborer,

On the night of April 18, 191, he entered the window to a room in

a Market Street boarding house in which an Indianapolis, Ind,, white
baker and his wife were staying. The lady had gone to sleep while
her husband had gone to a nearby bakery to seek employment, The
woman was awakened by the feeling of a hand on her leg and, thin king
that it was her husband, she called his name, Williams grabbed her
by the throat, threatened to kill her, and raped her, Afterwards he
demanded money but when she told him that she heard her husband
coming, he jumped through the window. She immediately nbbified her
landlady and another boarder who summoned two nearby policemen}.

They arrived within three minutes and arrested Williams who was lurk-
ing near the window, On the way to the police station, Williams con-
fessed that he had entered the house for purpose of burglary and said
that the woman had surprised him in her room and solicited him for
sexual antercourse which he admitted having accomplished, At his
