Bush, a black man, lived near Brooksville in the northern part. of
Noxubee Coe, Miss, On Nove 25, 1901, Constable Ernest Dismukes “went
to arrest him on a warrant charging him with the theft of a dog.

Bush had previously stated that he would not allow himself to be
arrested and when Dismukes arrived, Bush happened to be carrying a
Shotgun, Dismukes attempted to draw his pistol and Bush shot him
with the shotgun, killing him instantly. He made an escape and a
posse searched for him for several weeks without avail, te was finally
Spotted in Bessemer, Ala,, and when an attempt was made to capture him
he sought she to flee and was shot and seriously wounded. Public
Sentiment was very mach against him, and a lynching was averted only
when the judge ordered that he be confined in the jail at Meridian
and promised that he would receive a trial as quickly as he had re-
covered from his wounds, Convicted and sentenced to die, he was
hanged at Macon on Oct. 10, 1902,
