"Until 1917 the district courts (in Fort Worth, Tex.)
held concurrent civil and criminal jurisdiction, with
most of the criminal cases tried in the 17th District
Court, When a death penalty was imposed, the condemned
man was hanged by the sheriff in the old jail that stood
immediately north of the-courthouse, <A tunnel under
Belknap Street connected the two buildings, A special
criminal district court was formed'in 1917..,The present
Criminal Court building, completed in 1918, was built
with a trap door for hangings, The gallows were never
used because the state installed the electric tair in
the penitentiary...and began executing felons there, The
last man hanged in Fort Worth had to be transferred to
the old jail because the new gallows was not completed
