lanta, Ga. For approximately two weeks he had been having an affair
with a woman named Annie Mae Stewart. Early on the evening of April
3, 1948, they were drinking in a tavern when 23-year-old Jeriah
Steed entered and began conversing with Miss Stewart, making a date
to take her to a nightclub Later that evening. fEhis conversation
took place in the presence of and without any objection from Williams,
