"Griffin, GA, 9-17-1908: In the superior court yesterday,
Jack Cain was convicted upon the charge of murder and
Judge Reagan sentenced him to be hanged on Oct. 2h, Cain
is alleged to have killed Zack Brown, another negro, near
Rover, last month, and the killing is said to have been
entirely unprovoked, “+t remains to be seen whether or not
he is executed, as Spalding county has not had a legal
hanging in over 25 years, Two negroés were sentenced to
hang last year, the gallows had been erected and every-
thing was in readiness when their sentences were commuted
