JENKINS, Henry
Jenkins, a black man, lived in Fayette County, West Virginia. On
May 16, 1881, another FRE black man, Winkfield Saunders, who was
employed by the Nuttallburg Coal Company at Nuttallburg was paid a
considerable sum of money by his employers and when Jenkins noted
the large amount of cash that Saunders had in his possession, he
determined to rob him that night when Saunders started home. Fear-
ing such agpossibility, Saunders left his money in the care of a
friend. About midnight, Jenkins accosted Saunders on the railroad
track about two hundred yards west of the tipple and bludgeoned
him to death with a large rock. When he rifled his victim's pockets,
he discovered only one dime and he then weighted the body and threw
it into the New River where it was ERSAUEREIE subsequently discovere

victed and sentenced to die. On Nov. li, 1881, he became the first
man in the History of Fayette County to be executed when he was
