SULLIVAN, Joseph
Sullivan, a white tramp with a bad criminal record, went by the name
of Joe Woods. In August, 1877, in the extreme northwestern part of
the town of Bellmont, Franklin Coes Ne Yey he sold some clothes to
a respectable farmer named Steven Barber, When Barber paid him,
Sullivan noticed that he had around $30.00 in his possession and that
night he returned and forced entry into the house. He shot and
killed Mr, Barber as he lay in bed and shot Mrs, Barber twice, wound~
ing her seriously. He was captured two days later in Clinton County
and returned to Malone where a mob chased him and the officers who
were guarding him through the streets to the Jail with cries for
lynching. Mrs, Barber positively identified him, claiming that she
Saw him by the moon light and he was convicted and Sentenced to die,
He was hanged at Malone on February) , 1878,
