Delp, “vans and Judgeywere all Franklin County, Tenn., white men,
Judge had long been envious of some timber land which was overlooked
by the mountain home of Mr, and Mrs. Simon Bucher, an elderly couple,
While Judge had determined to steal the timber, he knew that any such
operation would be spotted by the Buchers who would report it to the
authorities. He hired Delp and Evans to kill the couple and, as an
added inducement, also told them that with the Buchers out of the
way they would be free to perform virtually any acts of lawlessness
in the neighborhood that they might desire. @ate on the afternoon
