HUGHES, John ('Jack!)
Hughes, a l\S-year-old native of England, immigrated to the United
States where he obtained employment as a miner in Sussex Co., Ne. J,
He married a widow who mk owned a home in Ogdensburg, N. Je, and per-
suaded her to go with him to his job in the Ogden mines and keep house
for him. &vidently, he subjected her to EHKK much abuse during their
three years of married life and she left him on one occasion for over
a year before he could persuade her to return. In Dec., 187), after
he had severely beat her, she returned to her home in Ogdensburg and
obtained employment. On January 7, 1875, he arrived XKSESXA in Ogdens-
burg and want to her home where she was confined by illness, As she
sat in a rocker bfore the fire, he struck her six times over the head
with an axe, He then set fire to the house, hoping that it would des~
troy evidence of the crime and went to a tavern where he got intoxi-
cated. Neighbors noticed the blaze and put the fire out before it
reached her body and she was found sitting in her chair with her braing
cosing out of her head, Hugheskstarted making suspicious inguiries
concerning his wife and he was arrested and charged with her ihurder.
Convicted and sentenced to die, he was hanged behind an enclosure in
the jail yard at Newton on July 2, 1875, before around 60 witnesses,
