Magers, Ect peige nl and a friend were living in Salem, Ore,,
with two women, He met a wealthy Sherman rancher, Raymond Sink, and
persuaded him to come to Salem for the purpose of purchasing a Ger-
vais livery stable, When Sink arrived, Magers was seen leaving town
with him and they drove into Polk County, ‘hen Magers, who had been
destitute before leaving town, returned alone, he had Sink's belong-
ings and was possessed with a good bit of money, He took his friend
and the two women to Portland where they spent several days in expen-
sive frotic, In the meantime, on Sept. 20, 1898, SiMEXKXHM Sink's
bedy, stripped of all valuables, was found floating in the KXXxxaHy
Willamette River near Salem and bore marks of foul play. Magers, the
last man to be seen with him, was trailed to Portland and taken into
custody there. The evidence against him was purely circumstantial
and he never confessed, Nonetheless, he was convicted and sentenced
to die, His case was unsuccessfully appealed to the Oregon Suprme
Court and he was hanged at Dallas on Feb, 2, 1900, |
