Chesser, an 18-year-old Middleburg, la., white youth wanted to

He walked over to the ditch and while the girl begged for her life,
he shot her again and killed her. He then fired his gun at Mrs.
Dilaberry-as-she ran into the woods with her child in her arms, but
the gun misfired. Chesser returned to his Middleburg home and was
arrested there. Because of the intensity of local feeling, he was
taken to the jail at Palatka-and held there until his trial in Green
