"Gabe Smith, 25, Houston, Tex., negro gunman, was electro=
cuted in the State Prison at Huntsville, Texas, early
Tuesday morning, March 19, 1935, for the murder of Alvin
LeGate, Houston grocer, who was shot to death during a
holdup in February, 1934, The negro, trembling slightly,
went to his death after issuing a brief statement in which
he made no reference to hiscrime, Three Charges of curren
were administered before the prison physician pronounced
Smith death at 12:13 4M, Smith was convicted a short time
after the slaying which occurred when Le Gate reached for

a gun as thenegro robber held up his store, Thenegro
