_CURREY, John

Currey; a 2heyear=old black native of Meridian, Miss,, arrived in
Somerset Co., Pas, during the Summer of 1920 and worked in the
Meyersdale region, first as a cook for a BBKXEFKEXZ road construc-
tion gang and then as a laborer at a sawmill. On Oct, 2244920, he
robbed Oliver E. Buskey at gun-point in front of a railway station
at Keystone Mines and spared his life only when Buskey pleaded with
hime George Mitchell and his 13-year-old son,W&XKSaXHEXSRXEKSIE

and Currey proceeded to rob the elder Mitchell who was crippled, He
ordered the frightened boy to place a double barrell shotgun on the
ground when he did so, Curry, without warning, picked it up and hit
the boy on the head with such force that his skull was crushed and
the gun broke in two pieces, He shot Mh, Mitchell in the leg and
ran into some swamps where he hid during the day while a posse sear-
ched for him. He was taken into custody by the Sheriff early the
next morning at the cabin that he shared with several other men and
womene He had the Walletts of Mitchell and Buskey and their watches

in his possession at the time and both men identified him as the
