In the fall of 1837, Copland's 19-year-old son, Joshua, received word
that he had received an inheritance in Virginia and Scott decided to
travel with the young man as far as his mother's home in Ohio, When
Copland started back carrying $600 in gold in his saddle bags, he
stopped at the Scott home and David BEAKE left with him to return to
the Copland farm. On Feb, 1, 1838, when they were about a mile from
home, they stopped to water their horses at a pond, While Copland
