Ruiz, a Mexican living in Bernalillo Co., N. M., and a friend We ri

where four children were playing in the front yard. Ruiz drew his
revolver and fired several shots into the group of children and
one of the shots killed 5~year-old Patricio O'Bannon while another
wounded 7-year-old Desiderio Aragon. Ruiz was not captured until
some time later and he was then tried, convicted and sentenced to
die. On June 1, 1900, he was hanged in a vanant building near the
then County Jail, Meeting his death bravely, he made a statement
from the gallows as follows: "Gentlemen - hbeware of drink; it has
brought me to this scaffold. Fathers of families ~ train your
children to respect everyone, and for the love of God keep them away
from liquor, for this is the cause of ruin, Now friends, in these,
my last moments, I ask you for the love of God to pray for my sould"
