"Memphis, Tenn., 8-19-1897-Henry DeBerry, colored, was
hanged in the yard of the Shelby Co, Jail this morning,
He protested his innocence on the gallows, Hanged for
attempted rape on 7-year-old Leonera Eigemann on Oct, 8,
1896. Had been sentenced to hang on July 20 but received
a 30-day respite. This is the first legal hanging for
attempted rape ever to take place in Tennessee,"
