GEORGE

George, a black man, was a slave who was owned by James Hill of
Bath County, Kye In September, 1815, he was charged with the
attempted rape of ll-year-old Mary Davis, the daughter of Walter
Davis, in Lewis County. A jury was empaneled, but no counsel
appeared for George and he was tried, convicted and sentenced to
die, Subsequently Mr, Hill arrived with an attorney and tried
to get an appeal on the grounds of an error in proceedings, but
the plea was over-ruled and George was sentenced on Sept, “ll a
1815 to be hanged, Accordingly, he was hanged at Clarksburg on
Oct. 275 2615.
