Damon, a black’'man, was a slave and the property of Tilghman Hunt,
a Slave dealer from Guilford Cos, Ne Ce On the night of March 3,
1851, Hunt was traveling from Virginia to his home. With him were a
él~year-old white man who he had hired named Pitts, Damon, four women
Slaves and a child slave, The party was traveling on a HbEEE wagon
and huggy, each drawn by a horse and they stopped approximately one
mile north of Fayetteville and made camp for the night. After Hunt
had gone to sleep, Pitts persuaded Damon to kill him, promising to
take Damon and the other slaves to freedom. Damon killed his Sleeping
master by striking him twice over the head with an axe and they then
took the body seven miles to Rockfish Creek where they weighted it
with stones, sewed it up in tent cloth and sank it in the creek,
fled before he could be taken into custody. Damon and the other slave:
