on the morning of August 25, 190), he appeared at a fishing camp :on
the Congaree River two miles from Columbia, The only person present
was a 15-year-old boy, Clarence IL, Shealy, who had.been left alone to
prepare breakfast for two fishermen with whom he was staying. Parr
sought to steal a distinctive .16 guage shotgun from the camp and
when Shealy resisted, Parr split his skull and face with a hoe, When
the two fishermen discovered the body about two hours later, they
promptly notified the authorities and stated that the only thing
missing from the camp was the shotgun, ‘when word spread that the gun

was missing, along with its description, Parr's brother-in-law report-
ed that. Parr had the gun and had shown it to him, A search of Parr's
residence uncovered the gun hidden between two matresses on a bed,

A six inch length of the barrel had been sawed from the gun and this
was found in a pocket in one of Parr's coats, He was endeavoring to
escape when he was eaptured by a posse of citizens on the railroad
track near the fair grounds, At his trial on Feb, 10 and Feb. 11,
