__ CORNELIUS, James W. ioe aces
| Cornelius, a 36-year-old native of Wayne Co., Ohio, resided in Canton
for 16 years with his wife Anna and was employed as a contractor.
Around 1902, he commenced drinking excessively and his reputation as
good and conscientiousk workman detrio&ted. In August, 1906, his wife
filed for a divorce and three weeks later, on Sept. 17,1906, he went
to his home and, when refused admittance, broke EMEXHSSEX¥S through
the door. He got a window weight from the basement and when his wife
refused to call off the divorce, he bludgeoned her to death in the
presence of her 20-year-old daughter by a previous marriage. After
| Anna was dead, Cornelius calmly went to a neighborhood store and pur=
chased some cigars, informing the proprietress that he had—just killed
his wife. He then went to the poliite station and turned himself in,
Cornelius! defense was one of dementia brought on by excessive drink-
ing with a complete lack of premeditation. However, numerous wit«
nesses testified that he was not drunk at the time of the crime and
he was convicted and sentenced to be executed. After a majority of
of six physicians who interviewed him stated that-he was sane, he was
electrocuted on June 28, 1907,
