Co, on Friday night fast week. It appears that Mr. John
Clift, the boy's master, was in Fredericksburg at the time
theattack was made on the life of his wife. Mr. Clift re-
sides in theneighborhood of Rappahannock Academy, It
seans that on thenight in ouestion, the negro boy, aged

about 17, came home later than usual when his mistress

told him she could not remain up all night ta give him his
upper, whereupon he got angry and told the children to

eave as he was going to kill their mother,. The boy got
an axe and dealt her four blows on the head, after which
