Bickford, a 19-year-old white man, lived in Dickinson, Franklin ‘Oey
New York, waere he was considered to have exceptional ability and was
& great favorite with the other young people, He was attending a
prayer meeting in Dickinson on the night of June 6, 1853, when’ he

saw John B. Secor, a prosperous horse trader from Westchester County,
pass in the company of another man. He persuaded a young boy named
Thomas Cook to accompany him and they set out in pursuit of the two
men, passing them in Duane, In the town of Franklin, near Loon Lake,
they waited in ambush and when the two men appeared, Bickford shot
and killed Secor, EXE&E The murdered man's companion escaped and
gave the alarm and both Bickford and Cook were arrested the next day
at Burke, At the time of his arrest, Bickford had Secor's watch and
purse in his possession. Cook wanted to plead guilty, but the court
insisted that he have a trial and both young men were convicted and
Sentenced to die. Bickford was hanged at Malone on Sept, 225 185.
A guard was kept with him at all times to prevent any effort at sui-
cide. In his home time of Dickinson, he was considered innocent and
at his funeral the officiating clergyman said that he had died 4a
martyr." Bickford's father termed the execution of his son as
"Franklin County's murder." Cook's Sentence was commited to life im-
