STEINGRAVER, Charles

Steingraver, a farm laborer, was employed’ by a Mr. Vantilburg on his
Ashland Co., Ohio, farm. On July )}, 1851, the Vantilburg family
attended-a Sunday School celebration in nearby Perrysburg, leaving
their 10-year-old blind daughter, Clarinda Vantilburg,alone on the
farm with Steingraver. During the family's absence, Steingraver
killed the child in an-attempt to commit rape. He protested his
innocence, but was arrested, tried and convicted of the crime. He
very calmly went to the gallows at Ashland, Ohio, before a crowd of
about 10,000 persons on Jan. 30, 1852. Before he was hanged, he
mada a speech to the crowd in both Inglish and German in which he
advised the people presént to avoid sins that were calculated to
lead them to vice and eventual ruin. His last words, spoken when
the Sheriff asked him if he was innocent or guilty, were: "Sheriff
