"Walhalla, Se Ce, 4-27-1883-Frazier Copeland was hanged
here today for the murder of William John Hunnicutt on
Dece 2, 1882. About an hour before his execution he was
permitted to make a statement from a window of the jail
to the crowd outside in which he asserted his entire inno-
cence of the crime for which he was about to die. His
neck was broken and he died with scarcely a tremor. Every:
thing passed off quietly and in an orderly manner. This
is the first person ever hanged in Oconee County."
