Ferrand, a black Rowan Co,, N.C., outlaw lived in fields and caves,
emerging at night to steal. food, whiskey and anything else that he
needed. He would take various women into the woods to share his
life and when he tired of them, they would return home. In febs, _
1895, he and several women were drinking and carousing in the woods
near the home of a dying white woman. A warrant was sworn out for
_Ferrand's arrest on charges of. disturbing the peace and Deputy Sherif!
Cas Owen raised a possee and trailed him. They finally cornered
Ferrand who was higing behind a barge tree and a gun battle ensued
_in which Ferrand was hit in the face with a load of shot. Owen __
