—TERRELL, Wilt.

Terrell, a 2l-year~old black man, lived in Nashville, Tenn, On Jan,
16, 1927, he was on Vaughn's-Gap Road, seven miles west of Nashville,
when he encountered Sl-year-old.Miss mma Porter, and her 71-year-old
blind sister, Miss Suzie Porter, The two white women had been toa —
-store where they exchanged some eggs for other foord- items and were
returning home when Terrell approached them and asked for some di-
rections, He then walked on ahead of the two women but suddeily
turned with a drawn knife and raped the younger woman, When the blind
sister, scream, he knocked her to the ground, Terrell, identified by
a description furnished by Miss Emma Porter, was taken into custody
“shortly afterwards on a Belle Meade street” car after it-had reached
Nashville, When he was positively identified, he confessed the rape
but denied that he had struck the blind sister, Indicted the day
after the crime, he was speedily brought to trial, convicted and -sen--
tenced to die, His execution was delayed by an unsuccessful appeal

to the Tennessee Supreme Court and then by a mental examination at the
State Hospital, While the results of the examination indicated that
he was far below normal mentality for his age, it ruled that he was

sane, and he was electrocuted at the Tennessee State Prison on June
19,1928, In spite of his earlier confession, he went to his death
