England. But he 'met with great misfortune in the World |
which hurt (his) estate much.! He was forced to go to
London where he was.'conseripted into. the army," The army
preved his undoing, for it was a 'school of vice for
drinking, gamin g, whoring, thievery, etc. and everything
that was bade’ His hitch in the army brought Clarkwright
in 1756 to the colonies, where he was captured by the
French, At the end of the war he was réleased in Ingland
and in 1768 he returned to America, going first to Mary=
land and then to New England. Clarkwright could find no
employment and soon was starting. He turned to crime in
order to feed himself, and was arrested for horse theft.
Tried and convicted, he was executed on the twentieth of
