a quarrel. ven though he had already been twice married, Strawser
was having an affair with a 16-year-old girl whose father agreed to
give his consent for their marriage if Strawser would obtain the
money to get him released from jail where he was Serving a sentence
for moonshingng. Early on the morning of Feb, 12, 1935, Strawser
went to the Gable farm, armed with a hammer and a revolver, and hid
in the barn, When Mr. Gable entered to attend to his chores, Straw-=
Ser struck him over the Head with the hammer, stunning him, and then
shot him through the neck,killing him instantly. He stole approximat-
ly $80.00 from the dead man's pockets and fled, Gable's body was
found shortly afterwards by his hired man and it was originally be-
lieved that he had died of a heart attack, but when the body was
taken to the mortician, he discovered that Gable had been murdered,
Strawser was suspected ‘almost immediately and arrested shortly after-
wards at his home. He confessed and 18 days after the crime, he
