RAYFIELD, Alfred

Rayfield, a 35-year-old black timber worker in Parksley, Accomack Co,
Vaey was known as a hard worker but possessed of a volatile temper
and he had been arrested on numerous occasions for felonious assault,
For no apparent reason, he bore a grudge against 50-year=hld Willian
West, also black, a respected house-mover and rigger who was a former
employer. Early on the morning of August 17, 1950, he forced his way
into West's home near Parksley and roused West from bed, When West
ordered him to leave the premises, Rayfield stabbed him twice in the
chest with a long-bladed knife, West was able to stagger to his front
yard where he died, Rayfield was arrested shortly afterwards at his
Sister's home. Tried, convicted and sentenced to die, he was electro-
cuted at the Virginia State Prison on November 17, 1950.
