DAVIS, Jasper

"Jasper Davis was hanged at Anderson, S. C., at 12:30 on
April 27, 1888, for the murder of his wife. He was the
second white man hanged in South Carolina in many years,
All morning he appeared to be in abject terror of death
and piteously spoke of the torment that awaited him, He
said he appreciated the enormity of his crime and admitted
his guilt. Many people assembled around the jail endea-
voring to get a sight of the condemned man but were kept
out with difficulty. The hanging was witnessed by only a
few persons,"
