Calhoun, a Montgomery, Alas, black man, and his wife, Annie, had
been separated for some time. On Christmas day, 1903, he went to
the house where she was living and asked her to step outside,

She noticed that he was carrying a double-barreled shotgun and re-
fused to do soe He then assured her that he meant her no harm
but only wanted to talk and she stepped to the door, He fired one
load into her body and then walked over and emptied the other

into her breast. Tried, convicted and sentenced to die, his death
was delayed by appeals and applications for a commtation of sen~
tence, but he was finally hanged at the Montgomery County Jail on
March 2h, 1905,
