Hugues, alias Hugas, alias Huguel, was either a Frenchman or a
French Canadian who could not speak any English. On January 25,
1807, he and a fellow countryman were in Somerset Coo, Pas, when they
observed a drover flashing a considerable sum of money at a tavern,
They decided to rob him and traveled four miles west where they wait-
ed on a road that they believed he, would pass. The drover went ano-
ther route and when David Pollock, a young man traveling west, passed
they shot him through the hip, dragged: him into the woods, stabbed
him twelve times and cut his throat. Some men who had observed the
foreigners in the area earlier heard the shot and discovered the
body shortly afterwards. A posse was rasied and it trailed the two
men:to a farm house where they were confronted as they prepared for
bed. Hugues! companion, whose name is not known, resisted arrest
and was killed. Hugues was taken to Somerset where he was tried,
convicted and sentenced to die, Before his execution, he requested
a Priest, but as there was not one in the area, the request could
nob be granted. A cart was provided to take him to the gallows, but
he expressed a desire to walk and was allowed to do 50. For this
first hanging in Somerset County, a crude gallows was constructed on
a hill near the Iutheran grage yard composed of a cross-beam laid
