Alarid, the Gonzales y Borregos, Valencia and Hipolito Vigil were all
close friends of Spanish descent and active in the politics of the
Republican Party in Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory. In 1890, Francis-
co Gonzales y Borrego was arrested on a trivial charge and lodged in
the County gail. At the time, Frank Chavez, a prominent Democrat was
Sheriff and a man named Dominguez was his deputy and jailer. While
Gonzales y Borrego:was in jail, he was beaten and otherwise abused by
Dominguez and when he complained to the Sheriff, Chaves told him that
he had received better treatment than he deserved, BSkKR8&EKS Gonzales
y Borrego argued and Chavez pistol whipped him. He swore then that
someday he would kill the Sheriff. After his release, his friends
prevailed on him to leave the Territory to avoid further trouble and
he went to Colorado where he remained for eighteen months until Chavez
had left office. He then returned to Santa Fe and, on the night of
May 29, 1892, he and his friends shot Chavez from ambush and killed
him as the former Sheriff was reburning home from town. There was no
evidence to connect them with the killing, but Dominguez was positive
that they had killed his friend and former boss_and a week Later, he
