OVERTON, Nathan Perry and TAYLOR, Noah
Overton, a 36-year-old w hite man, and Taylor, a 3l-year-old black
man, both married and the father of children, resided in Edgecombe
Cow, Ne OG. On the night of Nov. 2, 187, they went to the store
about 10 miles from Tarboro where 20-year-old William Grimes clerked
for his older brother. Young Grimes had already closed for the
night, but they asked for admittance on the grounds that they wanted
to purchase some molasses. The next morning, the xavcmaxyeumg door
was found open and the young man lying on the floor in his bwn blood,
his head frightfully bludgeoned. He regained consciousness long
enough to identify Overton and Taylor as his assailants and said
that he was struck from behind as he was drawing the molasses. They
were both taken into @ustody that day and had in their possession a
bloody ten dollar bill that they had taken from their victim who
died two days later, They were tried in Beauford County on a change
of venue and though both protested their innocence, the evidence
against them was overwhelming and they were convicted and sentenced
to hange Both accepted their fate calmly though they continued to
maintain their innocence. The night before their execution, they
